Any future that is more climate friendly will depend on a shift in consumer behavior that prioritizing reducing, reusing, and repairing (recycling is corporate PR). This recipe makes repair a community and social event and can be a space to trade knowledge and best practices of extending the life of the things we use and sharing resources

Serves: 2-8 people who want to learn and repair together. This one is particularly good for neighbors and intergenerational friends

Time: 1.5-4 hours

Ingredients

  • a theme of what to repair. This could be clothing, socks that need darned, appliances that need fixing, knives that need sharpening

  • some knowledge of repair techniques in your theme -- this could be crowd sourced

  • place to gather and tinker. A home, a garage, community center

How To

  1. Send an invite (and a calendar invite) to your Repair Fest at least 2 weeks in advance. Give people the chance to really check in with what they have and what can be repaired. This is a great opportunity to recruit neighbors or folks with repair expertise to help co-host

  2. Set up the space to accommodate active fixing. Are there enough outlets? Tools? Chairs? Space for people to spread out?

  3. This is likely to be a lot of parallel play and asking each other (and Google) for help. Background music may be helpful

  4. Ask folks what else they'd like to repair or learn to repair. Knowledge share. Who in the group is good with electronics? Gardening? Sewing? Teach each other things!
